This well-known wartime photograph captures German PzKpfw V Panther Ausf. D medium tanks of the 51st Tank Battalion during the Battle of Kursk in the Oryol region in late July 1943. The Panther, introduced shortly before the Kursk offensive, was intended to become Germany’s primary medium tank and a direct response to the Soviet T-34.

The Battle of Kursk — the largest armored clash of the Second World War — tested the Panther under real frontline conditions for the first time. Although the vehicle boasted powerful frontal armor, a high-velocity 75 mm KwK 42 gun, and excellent long-range firepower, its early production series suffered from significant mechanical issues. Many Panthers broke down due to engine fires, transmission failures, and suspension problems even before reaching the battlefield.

Despite these difficulties, Panthers that remained operational took part in heavy fighting against Soviet defensive belts. Their long-range accuracy made them dangerous opponents, but their vulnerabilities — especially from the sides and rear — combined with poor reliability limited their overall effectiveness during the Kursk offensive.

The photograph represents one of the most recognizable armored images from the Eastern Front: a line of early-model Panthers advancing across the steppe during one of the defining battles of 1943. Kursk marked both the peak and the turning point for German armored ambitions, after which the strategic initiative on the Eastern Front irreversibly shifted to the Red Army.
