The men are Heroes of the Soviet Union Alexander F. Burda, Frol E. Stolyarchuk, and Evgeny A. Luppov, whose combat service became part of the history of the Red Army's armored forces during the Great Patriotic War.
The KV-1 was among the most formidable heavy tanks fielded by the Soviet Union during the early years of World War II. Its thick armor and 76.2-mm gun allowed it to withstand many German anti-tank weapons that were effective against lighter Soviet vehicles. Although later German guns and improved tactics reduced this advantage, the KV-1 played an important role in slowing enemy offensives and supporting Soviet counterattacks.
Alexander Burda became one of the best-known Soviet tank commanders of the war. Alongside comrades such as Stolyarchuk and Luppov, he represented the growing experience of Soviet armored units, whose crews steadily improved their tactical skills after the difficult campaigns of 1941.
