Maria Dolina, Hero of the Soviet Union and Pe-2 dive bomber pilot, photographed in the Baltic States in 1944 during the Great Patriotic War.

This photograph shows Maria Ivanovna Dolina, one of the most accomplished Soviet bomber pilots of the Great Patriotic War. By the time this image was taken in 1944, she was serving as deputy commander of the 125th Guards Bomber Aviation Regiment and had already completed dozens of dangerous combat missions aboard the Petlyakov Pe-2.

During the war, Dolina flew 72 combat sorties, dropping approximately 45 tons of bombs on enemy positions. Her crews repeatedly operated under intense anti-aircraft fire and fighter attacks. In several engagements, the defensive gunners of her aircraft successfully fought off German fighters, contributing to the destruction of enemy aircraft while protecting the bomber.

On August 18, 1945, Maria Dolina was awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union in recognition of her courage, leadership, and combat achievements. Her career reflected the important role played by Soviet women in military aviation, where they served not only as pilots but also as navigators, commanders, mechanics, and instructors throughout the war.

Today, Maria Dolina remains one of the best-known female bomber pilots of the Great Patriotic War. Photographs such as this preserve the image of a generation whose combat experience became an important chapter in the history of Soviet aviation during the Second World War.
