Historical record from the USHMM archives depicting forced labor and an SS Hauptscharführer at the Rabka forced labor training facility in occupied Poland, circa 1939–1941.

Archival Record: SS Guard and Forced Labor in Rabka-Zdrój (1939–1941)
This historical photograph, preserved in the collection of the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum (USHMM), documents conditions during the German occupation of Poland between 1939 and 1941. The scene was captured in Rabka-Zdrój (located approximately 70 kilometers south of Kraków), the site of a notorious Security Police and SD (Sicherheitspolizei und SD) training school and forced labor facility managed by SS personnel.
The image serves as an important primary source document illustrating the treatment of forced laborers and the technical uniform insignia worn by SS administrative personnel overseeing camp operations in the General Government region.
Insignia Analysis of the SS Personnel
An examination of the uniform details visible on the standing SS guard provides specific historical evidence regarding his rank and background:
- Company Senior NCO Rings (Kolbenringe): The double woven silver rings on the lower sleeve cuffs (commonly referred to as Kolbenringe) designate the position of Hauptscharführer / Kompaniefeldwebel (Company First Sergeant or "Spieß"). This indicated the individual was a senior administrative non-commissioned officer responsible for internal unit discipline and duty rosters.
- Honor Chevron for the Old Guard (Ehrenwinkel der Alten Kämpfer): The chevron visible on the upper right sleeve identifies the wearer as an early member of the NSDAP or SS who joined the organization prior to January 30, 1933, marking him as part of the veteran cadre assigned to occupation duties in Poland.
- Guard Duty Accessories: The guard holds a walking cane or physical discipline stick, accompanied by service dogs used for security perimeter enforcement at forced labor sites.
Historical Context: The Rabka School and Labor Camp
During the occupation of Poland, Rabka-Zdrój was converted into a key operational site for the Nazi police apparatus:
- Sipo/SD School Facility: Under the command of SS-Untersturmführer Wilhelm Rosenbaum, the former school building served as an execution and training complex for Security Police cadets.
- Forced Labor System: Local Jewish populations and prisoners were subjected to harsh physical labor, earthworks, and quarry operations under direct guard supervision prior to the formal establishment of regional extermination centers.
