SS Sturmpioniere Riding StuG III Ausf. G at Battle of Kursk (July 1943)

This archival photograph captured in July 1943 during Operation Citadel (Battle of Kursk) depicts assault pioneers (Sturmpioniere) from the 2nd SS Panzergrenadier Division "Das Reich" riding into battle mounted on a German StuG III (Sturmgeschütz III) assault gun.

Combat engineers frequently hitched rides on armored assault vehicles to quickly reach minefields, anti-tank obstacles, or fortified Red Army defensive lines during the heavy fighting on the southern face of the Kursk salient.

Vehicle Identification: StuG III Ausf. G (Early Production)

While some historical archives misidentify this armored vehicle as an Ausf. F, several distinct visual details confirm it is an early-production StuG III Ausf. G:

  • Commander's Cupola: Visible on the upper left section of the superstructure is the prominent commander’s cupola with vision blocks, a feature introduced exclusively with the Ausf. G production in December 1942.
  • Side Skirt Rail Brackets: Metal rail mountings for Schürzen (anti-tank side skirts) run along the upper side hull. The protective plates were often removed or lost in dense terrain.
  • Armored Superstructure: The sloped side cheek armor and early-pattern boxy mantlet housing the 7.5 cm StuK 40 L/48 main gun distinguish this from late-war Saukopf (pig's head) cast mantlet variants.
  • Sturmpioniere Equipment: The SS combat engineers carry personal infantry arms, demolition gear, and pioneer tools essential for breaching Soviet defensive positions in the Kursk sector.

Historical Role during Operation Citadel

The Das Reich Division was heavily engaged around Prokhorovka and the southern sector of the Kursk salient in July 1943. StuG III assault guns provided direct fire support to infantry units, destroying bunkers and engaging Soviet T-34 tanks, while carrying combat pioneers directly to fortified objectives.
