The city became one of the principal objectives during the fighting that followed the Normandy landings because of its importance as a German transportation and communications center.
In preparation for the Allied ground offensive, Saint-Lô was subjected to intensive aerial bombardment. Although the attacks were intended to disrupt German defenses and supply routes, they also caused extensive destruction throughout the city. By the end of the battle, most of Saint-Lô had been reduced to ruins, earning it the nickname "The Capital of Ruins."
The medieval Notre-Dame Church survived the fighting but suffered severe damage, as seen in this photograph. Much of the surrounding urban area was also devastated. Following the war, both the church and the city underwent a lengthy reconstruction process.
