Dramatic German reconnaissance aerial photograph showing bombs falling over Sevastopol Harbor and the Navy Yard during the intense siege of June 1942.

Luftwaffe Aerial Bombardment Over Sevastopol (June 1942)
This striking aerial strike photograph captures the intensity of air attacks during the final assault on the fortress city of Sevastopol in June 1942 (Operation Störfang). Taken from a Luftwaffe bomber or high-altitude reconnaissance aircraft, the image shows two heavy high-explosive bombs (SC series) falling through the air toward key naval infrastructure and defense sectors surrounding Sevastopol Bay.
Visible in the lower portion of the frame are white smoke plumes marking impacts and defensive smoke screens deployed across Sevastopol Harbor, South Bay (Yuzhnaya Bay), and the surrounding urban grid.
Topography and Key Strategic Targets Visible
The high-altitude perspective provides a comprehensive photographic survey of the heavily fortified Black Sea Naval Base:
- Sevastopol Bay & North Side: The upper portion of the photograph depicts the Northern shore, including coastal artillery positions, Fort Stalin, and Fort Severnaya guarding the entrance to the main roadstead.
- South Bay and Naval Shipyards: The central waterway (Yuzhnaya Bay) cuts into the main city center, where Soviet Black Sea Fleet repair docks, coastal batteries, and supply depots were subjected to continuous carpet bombing.
- City Grid and Infrastructure: The grid pattern of central Sevastopol is clearly outlined below, showing extensive cratering, defensive trench lines, and burning structures across the city.
Role of the Luftwaffe 8th Air Corps (Fliegerkorps VIII)
The air campaign against Sevastopol was among the most concentrated aerial bombardments of World War II:
- Massed Air Power: Generaloberst Wolfgang von Richthofen’s 8th Air Corps (Fliegerkorps VIII) deployed over 600 combat aircraft, including Junkers Ju 87 Stukas, Heinkel He 111s, and Junkers Ju 88 medium bombers to support General Erich von Manstein’s 11th Army.
- Air Strike Intensity: Between June 2 and July 1, 1942, Luftwaffe units flew more than 23,000 sorties over the Sevastopol defense perimeter, dropping over 20,000 tons of high-explosive and incendiary munitions onto fortresses, coastal batteries, and harbor facilities.
