Heroism at the Yelnya-Smolensk Highway Breakout

On June 16, 1942, during the dramatic final breakout of Belov's corps across the fortified German defense line along the Yelnya-Smolensk highway, Yablokov's squadron was assigned to dislodge enemy forces from the villages of Klekhovo and Staraya Vuda.

Under intense German artillery and machine-gun fire at a critical moment in the assault, 18-year-old Yablokov personal charging forward first, rallying his fellow soldiers to storm into the village and secure the passage for the main cavalry column. For his decisive heroism, he was officially nominated for the Order of the Red Star.
