Volkssturm fighter (German Volkssturm, volks – people, sturm – storm; people’s storm) from the German militia units, created in the last months of World War II to repel the onslaught of the anti-Hitler coalition on its territory. In accordance with the Defense Law, members of the organization were soldiers and, in the event of the deployment of its units to conduct military operations, became part of the German army. The organizational formation of the Volkssturm was entrusted to the NSDAP; militarily it was subordinate to the OKW.
