A staged training photograph:

Unlike photographs taken in combat, this image was clearly intended as a training or publicity photograph.

The soldiers strike dramatic poses with fixed bayonets while advancing across the training ground, creating an image designed to convey confidence, discipline and fighting spirit. Such photographs were widely used before and during the Second World War to promote military preparedness and strengthen public confidence in the armed forces.

Fort Benning before America's entry into the war:

The photograph was taken at Fort Benning, one of the U.S. Army's principal training centers.

In August 1941, the United States had not yet entered the Second World War, but the American military was rapidly expanding. Thousands of recruits were passing through training camps as the Army prepared for the possibility of entering the global conflict.

Only four months later, following the attack on Pearl Harbor, many soldiers trained at Fort Benning would soon be deployed overseas.

The standard equipment of an American infantryman:

Each soldier carries the M1 Garand, widely regarded as one of the finest service rifles of the Second World War. Chambered for the powerful .30-06 Springfield cartridge and fed from an eight-round en-bloc clip, it gave American infantrymen a significant advantage in sustained firepower.

The soldier in the foreground wears the Mark II gas mask, standard protective equipment intended to defend troops against possible chemical attacks. Although chemical weapons were rarely used on the major battlefields of World War II, gas masks remained part of every soldier's standard issue throughout the conflict.
