Soviet Urban Assault with BA-64 and M3A1 Scout Cars in Mühlhausen, East Prussia (January 1945)
This dynamic action photograph taken on January 24, 1945 by famous Soviet war photographer Arkady Shaikhet captures Red Army assault infantry and armored reconnaissance vehicles engaged in intense street combat in Mühlhausen, East Prussia (present-day Młynary, Poland).
The town was liberated during the swift Mława-Elbing Offensive by forces of the 2nd Belorussian Front as Soviet armor broke through toward the Baltic coast, severing German supply lines across East Prussia.
Equipment, Uniforms, and Visual Features
The image offers an extraordinary combination of Soviet domestic armor, US-supplied Lend-Lease combat vehicles, and tactical urban warfare details:
- BA-64 Light Armored Car Details: In the right foreground, the rear and open-topped octagonal turret of a Soviet BA-64 light armored car are visible. The 7.62 mm DT machine gun (M1929) is clearly fitted with a canvas spent shell bag suspended beneath the receiver to catch hot brass casings inside the cramped fighting compartment.
- Lend-Lease M3A1 Scout Cars: In the background, two American-supplied M3A1 Scout Cars carrying reconnaissance infantry advance along the snow-covered street, demonstrating the heavy reliance of Red Army mobile spearheads on Lend-Lease wheel transport.
- Urban Warfare and Environment: Flames and thick black smoke pour from a corner building featuring German street sign writing (König-Str.) and a tavern notice (Gaststuben), alongside a damaged public streetlamp and advertisement kiosk.
- Infantry Tactics and Gear: Red Army assault troops armed with PPSh-41 submachine guns cross the snow-covered intersection on foot, wearing M1940 wool overcoats, hooded camouflage capes, and winter earflap hats (Ushanka).
The Fall of Mühlhausen
The capture of Mühlhausen was a critical tactical stepping stone during the Red Army's drive to sever the German Army Group Center in East Prussia. The surrounding area also contained a forced-labor subcamp belonging to the Stutthof concentration camp network, which was liberated shortly after the town was cleared of Axis troops.
