This striking wartime photograph captures Soviet infantry attacking German defensive positions under the cover of a dense smoke screen during fighting on the Arctic Front in 1944. Taken at the height of the offensive, the image vividly conveys the confusion, urgency, and danger of an assault carried out under enemy fire.
The attacking soldiers are armed with SVT-40 semi-automatic rifles and a DP-27 light machine gun. Although the SVT-40 had become less common in many Red Army rifle units by the later years of the war, it continued to serve in a number of formations, making its appearance in this photograph an interesting reminder of the varied equipment still found on different sectors of the front.
The assault is being conducted behind a thick smoke screen, a tactic frequently employed to reduce the effectiveness of German machine-gun and artillery fire. In the rocky landscape of the Arctic, where natural cover was often limited, smoke could provide the precious seconds needed for assault troops to close the distance to enemy positions.
