This remarkable documentary portrait taken in late summer 1941 by famous TASS war correspondent Evgeny Khaldei features 14-year-old Red Army regimental pupil (syn polka) Valdemar (Voldmar) Vilgelmovich Pilain (1926–2004) on the Western Front.

First published in the national newspaper Izvestia (Issue No. 212, September 7, 1941), the photograph captures one of the many young volunteers who served in frontline Soviet units during the critical early months of the Great Patriotic War.

Uniform, Equipment, and Visual Features

The portrait provides detailed visual evidence of standard Red Army frontline personal infantry equipment from 1941:

  • Steel Helmet (SSh-40): Valdemar wears a standard-issue SSh-40 steel helmet, fitted over a cloth cap for field comfort.
  • Model 1935 Gymnastyorka: He is dressed in an M1935 field tunic with folded collar tabs, secured by standard leather waist belts and Y-shaped supporting shoulder leather straps.
  • RGD-33 Stick Grenade: Tucked into his waist belt is an RGD-33 offensive/defensive hand grenade with its fragmentation sleeve attached.
  • Artistic Framing: Evgeny Khaldei's signature low-angle portrait framing emphasizes resilience and determination in the face of the ongoing enemy offensive.

Combat Service and Military Decorations

Valdemar Pilain was officially enrolled in the Red Army on July 25, 1941, serving with the 677th Light Artillery Regiment (229th Rifle Division, 20th Army). Wounded in action later in 1941, he recovered and returned to active service with the 200th Rifle Division as a crew member on a 45mm M1937 (53-K) anti-tank gun.

For exceptional bravery and tactical skill during combat operations, he was awarded prestigious Soviet decorations:

  • Medal "For Valor" (March 20, 1943)
  • Order of Glory III Class (July 26, 1944)
  • Order of the Red Star (August 4, 1944)
