This exceptional pre-war archival photograph captured in 1940 shows a formation of Red Army Air Force (VVS RKKA) Polikarpov I-16 Type 29 fighter aircraft flying through cloud cover during military exercises.

Designed by Nikolai Polikarpov, the I-16—affectionately nicknamed "Ishak" (Donkey) by Soviet pilots and "Rata" (Rat) during the Spanish Civil War—was the world's first low-wing cantilever monoplane fighter with retractable landing gear to enter mass production and operational service.

Technical Innovations of the I-16 Type 29

The Type 29 represented the final production variant of the famous I-16 series, incorporating key armament and structural modifications based on combat experience in Spain and Khalkhin Gol:

  • Upgraded Armament Configuration: Unlike earlier variants equipped with wing-mounted guns, the Type 29 removed wing armament to improve roll rates. Instead, it was armed with one heavy 12.7mm Berezin BS machine gun mounted in the lower fuselage between the wheel wells and two 7.62mm synchronized ShKAS machine guns in the upper nose.
  • Fuselage Fairings: Visible directly in front of the pilot's cockpit canopy is the raised streamlined fairing housing the upper synchronized 7.62mm ShKAS machine gun mechanism.
  • Powerplant and Performance: Powered by the 900 hp Shvetsov M-63 radial engine, the Type 29 featured reinforced wing structures, radio equipment capability, and underwing racks for RS-82 unguided rockets or auxiliary fuel tanks.
  • Tail Wheel Modification: The tail skid used on earlier production batches was replaced with a small tailwheel to improve ground handling on unpaved frontline airfields.

Service on the Eve of Operation Barbarossa

By mid-1940, the I-16 formed the numerical backbone of Soviet fighter aviation. Though rapidly approaching obsolescence compared to newer German Messerschmitt Bf 109E and F fighters, experienced Soviet pilots continued to score victories in the I-16 during the tough defensive air battles of 1941.
