Invasion of Normandy: anti-aircraft gun crew on a US Coast Guard transport vessel during a landing in Normandy.

In the anti-aircraft gun crew photo on the left is the 3rd-class sailor John R. Smith, on the right is Daniel J. Kaczorowski.

John Smith participated in landings in Africa, Sicily and Italy.

The invasion of Normandy (Normandy landings, fr. Débarquement de Normandie) or Operation “Neptune” (eng. Operation Neptune, fr. Opération Neptune) – amphibious landing operation, carried out on June 6, 1944 in Normandy during the Second World War by US forces, Great Britain , Canada and their allies against Nazi Germany.
The invasion of Normandy was the first part of the Overlord strategic operation, which envisioned the liberation of northwestern France by the Allies.
