Downed Romanian Henschel Hs 129B-2 and Soviet Anti-Aircraft Gun Crew (October 11, 1943)
This compelling archival photograph, captured on October 11, 1943, depicts a Soviet officer congratulating the commander of an anti-aircraft battery that successfully shot down a Romanian Air Force attack aircraft.
The wreckage belongs to a German-built Henschel Hs 129B-2 (W.Nr. 141263, tactical number "327") flown by Romanian Lieutenant Munteanu. Despite the destruction of his aircraft, Munteanu survived the crash landing and was rescued on the spot by a fellow wingman who landed nearby to pick him up.
The Markings and Fate of Lieutenant Munteanu
A closer look at the damaged airframe reveals distinct personal and unit insignia:
- Sling and Slogan: Just ahead of the Romanian Royal Cross on the fuselage, the phrase «HAI FETITO» («Let's go, little girl») is painted, accompanied by Munteanu's personal emblem—a skull and tilted bone—on the vertical stabilizer.
- A Fortunate Pilot: Munteanu proved to be an exceptionally resilient combat aviator, surviving multiple crash landings while flying operations against the Red Army, and later participating in actions against the Luftwaffe following Romania's change of allegiance in 1944.
Anti-Aircraft Defense on the Eastern Front
By late 1943, frontline Soviet anti-aircraft units had grown highly proficient in dealing with low-flying close-support aircraft like the heavily armored Hs 129, turning heavily contested sectors into deadly airspace for Axis ground-attack groups.
