American pilots, Crew #13, who took part in the Doolittle Raid. The aircraft number is 40-2247. Nickname – The Avenger. Target – Yokosuka. 37th Bomber Squadron.

Crew Commander – First Pilot Lieutenant Edgar E. McElroy;
Co-pilot, Lieutenant Richard A. Knobloch.

Navigator, Lieutenant Clayton J. Campbell;
Bombardier, Master Sergeant Robert C. Bourgeois;
Flight Engineer Sergeant Adam R. Williams.


Lieutenant Edgar E. McElroy’s plane bombed a naval base in Yokosuka harbor. The first bomb hit a ship in dry dock. The victim was a Japanese aircraft carrier converted from a transport ship. The explosion overturned the ship and caused a fire. The second bomb hit a large crane in the dockside area. An incendiary bomb fell on a residential area, causing a fire. The plane safely reached the territory of China, where the American pilots jumped with parachutes. Sgt Adam R. Williams dislocated his knee upon landing. After 3 days, the crew reached the assembly point. American pilots fought in Indochina for more than a year.
