American Marines from the US Navy bury Japanese Lieutenant General Yoshitsugu Saitō at Tanapag in the Battle of Saipan. Pacific theater of operations, World War II.
Yoshitsugu Saitō was wounded by shrapnel and committed hara-kiri in a cave at dawn on July 10, 1944. His adjutant ended the general’s life with a shot in the head.
By order of US Marine Corps General Holland McTyeire Smith, Yoshitsugu Saitō was buried with military honors.
