War cemetery of German soldiers from the 227th Division of the Nazi Wehrmacht on the Eastern Front during World War II in the Soviet Russia.
Above the gate of war cemetery there is an inscription in German: “The war cemetery of heroes of 227th Infantry Division”.
227th Infantry Division was part of the German Heeresgruppe Nord, took part in the siege of Leningrad, and during 1942 suffered heavy losses in the battles against the Red Army, had tried unsuccessfully to break the blockade of Leningrad. Most likely, judging by the autumn scenery around in the photo cemetery of soldiers killed during the fierce fighting during the Soviet troops failed to Sinyavinskaya operation in September-October 1942.
During the operation “Iskra” (the Soviet offensive south of Lake Ladoga with the aim of breaking the siege of Leningrad) 227 Infantry Division of the Wehrmacht in the January 18, 1943 was encircled. Soon the soldiers made it out of the encirclement, but the loss in the division have been very heavy.
