He during the Great Patriotic War of the Soviet Union (1941-1945) fought in the 158th and 154th Fighter Regiments. By February 1942, he won 5 victories personally and 5 in the group (according to other sources, 3 personal victories and 2 in the group).
In January 1942, in an air battle, Vladimir Yakovlev was seriously wounded, the result of which was the loss of an eye. In the spring of 1943, he returned to his regiment as a squadron adjutant, but was no longer allowed to fly.
