USS Sauth Dakota (BB-57) is the lead US battleship of the same class.
American battleship “South Dakota”, nicknamed Battleship “X”, was built during World War II. BB-57 was the third US Navy ship to be named after the 40th state. The “South Dakota” during World War II first made a 15-month voyage in the Pacific ocean, where she fought against the Japanese Navy before returning to New York for rebuilding.
After modernization in May 1943, “Sauth Dakota” joined the British naval convoys in the North Atlantic and Arctic before returning to the Pacific Fleet in August 1943. There, the battleship participated in the combat operations that preceded the invasion of Japan. After the end of the war in October 1945, BB-57 returned to the United States.
