The US Marine Corps (USMC, US Marines) is an integral part of the US armed forces, their branch. Together with the US Navy, the corps is subordinate to the US Department of the Navy. The USMC strength is estimated at 200,000. Because American Marines units are traditionally trained, organized, and equipped specifically for operations outside their home territory (expeditionary forces), they have long been viewed as a quick reaction force.
