May 30, 1942, Boris Feoktistovich Safonov was killed in an air battle. June 14, 1942 the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR adopted a decree on awarding Boris Safonov with the second medal “Gold Star” (posthumously). This was the first time during the Great Patriotic War with the secondary appropriation of the title of Hero of the Soviet Union.
