A large oceanic German submarine U-550 (type IXC/40) is drowning in the North Atlantic, east of New York, shelled by depth charges and artillery fire from three US destroyers. 44 crew members were killed, 12 were rescued.
The U-550 German submarine, under the command of Lieutenant-Commander Klaus Henert, was sunk during his first and last military campaign, during which he succeeded in sinking the Pan Pennsylvania (11,017) tanker from the sea convoy CU-21, after which the U-550 German submarine was sunk by destroyers “Gandhi”, “Joyce” and “Peterson”.
