The commander of the German submarine U-120 (Type IIB), Lieutenant Ernst Bauer, Zur See, 1914-1988, smokes on the upper deck of a surfaced submarine.
Ernst Bauer was the first commander of this training submarine from April to November 1940. Later, from March 1941 to February 1943, he commanded U-126 (type IX-C). He sank 25 ships with a total displacement of about 112000 ton of displacement.

The military biography of Ernst Bauer is also interesting by the fact that he was aboard the famous German raider Atlantis at the time of his last battle against the British heavy cruiser Devonshire on November 22, 1941. Bauer’s submarine, U-126, was refueled by Atlantis and sank at the moment the Devonshire appeared under the command of Senior Lieutenant Lieutenant Zur See Kurt Neubert. Neubert did not attack the Devonshire, which was only 7 miles from Atlantis.
