The Soviet 2 Guards Infantry Division and the T-34 medium tanks of the 51-th Separate Tank Regiment of the Red Army Armoured Force stormed to the German Kuban bridgehead fortification line on the Taman peninsula.
Availability 400,000th military groups and shortened front line allowed the Wehrmacht to create here a very tight defense, named Kuban bridgehead (“Goth’s head position” (Gotenkopfstellung). The fighting here lasted from February to September 1943, while the last German troops were evacuated to the Crimea.
For the liberation of the Taman Peninsula 2nd Guards Rifle Division in the October 9, 1943 he received the honorary title of “Taman”.
