SS Potrero del Llano, the Mexican tanker burns after a torpedo attack by the German U-564 submarine from the Nazi Kriegsmarine in the Battle of the Atlantic during World War II.
On April 13, 1942, the 4,000-ton SS Potrero del Llano tanker sailing from Tampico to New York was torpedoed and sunk by the German submarine U-564 commanded by Reinhard Suhren.
The attack killed 13 of the tanker’s 35 crew members. The sinking of this tanker, as well as the sinking of the SS Faja de Oro on May 21, 1942, prompted Mexico to declare war on Nazi Germany on May 22, 1942.
