Soviet Sappers Demining Nikitin Square in Liberated Voronezh (January 1943)
This historic photograph taken by war correspondent Leonid Velikzhanin in January 1943 captures Soviet Red Army combat engineers (sappers) clearing unexploded ordnance and German landmines from Nikitin Square in Voronezh following the city's liberation.
During their retreat, Axis forces extensively mined municipal infrastructure, roads, and public squares. To ensure the safety of military transport and returning civilians, Red Army engineering units were deployed immediately behind front-line assault forces to sweep urban sectors.
Equipment, Uniforms, and Visual Features
The image highlights specialized mine-clearing technology utilized by the Red Army during the mid-war period:
- VIM-210 Induction Mine Detector: The sapper in the foreground operates a VIM-210 mine detector (Model 1939). A key engineering feature was its mounting system, which attached the search coil directly to the barrel or bayonet of a standard 7.62mm Mosin-Nagant rifle, allowing the firearm to serve as both the operator's search handle and personal defense weapon.
- Sweep Technique in Snow: The sapper carefully hovers the oval search coil just above the deep winter snow cover, listening for audio signals via headphones connected to the amplifier box carried on his belt or shoulder harness.
- Winter Gear: The combat engineers wear heavy wool greatcoats, padded mittens, and traditional winter fur caps (ushankai) with earflaps down against the extreme January frost.
- Urban Background: Behind the lead sapper, a secondary engineer observes the perimeter while damaged civic buildings surrounding Nikitin Square bear testimony to the fierce urban fighting for Voronezh.
The Liberation of Voronezh
The Battle of Voronezh (July 1942 – January 1943) was a crucial engagement on the southern flank of the Eastern Front. On January 25, 1943, Soviet forces of the Voronezh Front completely liberated the city. Rapid demining operations were vital to clearing main thoroughfares and neutralizing booby traps left in public administration buildings.
