Guards Fighter Pilots Beside a La-5F
This wartime photograph shows Soviet fighter pilots Sergey Yulianovich Yasanis (left) and Kalmyatov standing beside a Lavochkin La-5F fighter aircraft in 1944. Both served in elite Guards aviation formations of the Soviet Air Force during the Great Patriotic War. The La-5F was one of the Red Army's most effective frontline fighters, combining excellent low-altitude performance with the firepower needed to challenge the Luftwaffe over the Eastern Front.
Sergey Yasanis, born in 1922, served with the 113th Guards Fighter Aviation Regiment. By the end of the war he had become commander of a separate reconnaissance squadron. Throughout his combat career he completed an extraordinary 416 combat sorties, including 328 aerial reconnaissance missions, and fought in 51 air battles, personally shooting down seven enemy aircraft.
His wartime service was marked by exceptional endurance. Yasanis was shot down six times, made four forced landings, and twice escaped from burning aircraft by parachute. Despite repeated injuries and losses, he continued flying combat missions until the final months of the war.
For his courage and distinguished service, Yasanis received numerous decorations, including the Order of the Red Banner, the Order of Alexander Nevsky, the Order of Bogdan Khmelnitsky (3rd Class), the Order of the Patriotic War (1st Class), the Order of the Red Star, and several campaign medals.
Beyond documenting two Soviet aviators, this photograph illustrates the professionalism and resilience of the Guards fighter units that played an increasingly important role in achieving air superiority over the Eastern Front during the final stages of World War II.
