June 14, 1942 for the courage and bravery shown in battles with enemies, was awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union. January 7, 1943 died in a plane crash. He was buried in the city of Kronstadt in the city cemetery.
Data on the total number of victories made by G. D. Kostylev, in various sources does not match. In total, he made from 400 to 418 sorties, took part in 89 (according to other data 112) air battles, shot down from 46 to 54 enemy aircraft. November 23, 1942 he was awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union.
