Personnel of the 4th Ferry Aviation Regiment of the 1st Ferry Aviation Division of the Soviet Civil Air Fleet dance with local women to the music of an accordion during a brief moment of rest in Yakutsk in 1943.

A rare moment away from war:
Unlike the countless combat photographs of World War II, this image captures a peaceful scene far from the battlefield.
The Soviet pilots, dressed in flight gear, spend a few carefree moments dancing with local women while an accordion player provides the music. Such scenes offered a brief escape from the hardships and constant responsibility of wartime service.
The Alaska–Siberia air route:
The men in the photograph served in the 4th Ferry Aviation Regiment, one of the units responsible for transporting American Lend-Lease aircraft along the famous Alaska–Siberia (ALSIB) route.
After being accepted from American crews in Alaska, aircraft were flown across thousands of kilometers of Siberian wilderness through a chain of Soviet airfields before eventually reaching operational combat units on the front.
Although these ferry flights took place far from enemy fire, they were extremely dangerous. Pilots faced severe Arctic weather, unreliable navigation over vast uninhabited territories and long distances between airfields. Many aircraft and crews were lost during these demanding missions.
Yakutsk — a vital link in the air bridge:
During the war, Yakutsk became one of the most important staging points on the ALSIB route.
Thousands of American fighters, bombers and transport aircraft passed through the city on their way to the Soviet Air Force. For the pilots and ground crews, short periods of rest in places like Yakutsk were precious opportunities before continuing another long and demanding flight across Siberia.
This photograph preserves one of those rare moments when music, dancing and ordinary human warmth briefly overshadowed the realities of war.
