SS-Panzer-Division “Totenkopf” – the Waffen SS unit was formed from October 16 to November 1, 1939 at the SS training camp in Dachau as a motorized infantry division. The division was based on the rank of SS Totenkopf, as well as officers of the SS reinforcement units and SS-Heimwehr Danzig. The first commander of 3. SS-Panzer-Division “Totenkopf” was the founder of the concentration camp inspector Theodor Eike.
