British Prince Henry, Duke of Gloucester (Henry William Frederick Albert, 1900-1974) shakes hands with the captain of the Australian army during an inspection of the armed forces.
Prince Henry was the younger brother of King George VI of Great Britain. Unlike the traditional service for the royal family in the navy, he was a career officer in the British army with the rank of colonel of the Scottish Guard (years of service 1919-1937, 1939-1945). In 1940 he was deputy commander of the 20th Panzer Brigade of the British Army. In early 1945 he was appointed Governor General of Australia.
