From the beginning of the war until April 1942, Yuri Ivanov served as head of communications workshops first in the 655th airfield service battalion, and then in the 70th Separate Communication Battalion of the 70th Airborne Division of the Moscow Military District. In April 1942 he was sent to the 1st Gorky Reserve Rifle Brigade, where until November 1942 he was the commander of the radio platoon. In November 1942, Yuri Ivanov was sent to the army in the 6th Mechanized Corps, where he served until the end of the war (Stalingrad, Kursk Bulge, Right Bank Ukraine, Berlin, Prague).

Senior Lieutenant Yuri Ivanov was awarded the Order of the Red Star, the Patriotic War of the second degree, medals “for Military Merit”, “For the Defense of Stalingrad”, “For the Taking of Berlin”, and “For the Liberation of Prague”.
