The Heinz-Wolfgang Schnaufer photo was taken after the night of February 15-16, 1944, when Schneufer shot down three British Avro Lancaster bomber.

Heinz-Wolfgang Schnaufer ended the war as a major, scoring 121 night victories for 164 sorties, becoming the most effective night fighter pilot.
On July 13, 1950, Schnaufer was involved in a road accident in France near the town of Biarritz and died from his injuries two days later.
