The American experimental jet fighter Northrop XP 79B was designed in the years of World War II from January 1943 to June 1944.
Technical characteristics: length – 4.3 m, wingspan – 8.5 m, height – 2.1 m. Wing area – 25.8 sq. M. Empty weight – 2.65 tons, takeoff weight – 3.93 tons. Power plant – two Westinghouse 19B turbojet engines (thrust 5.1 kN). Maximum speed – 880 km / h, flight range – 1600 km, flight altitude – 12200 m, rate of climb – 21 m / s. Supposed armament – four 12.7 mm machine guns.
Northrop XP-79B was built in a single copy, which crashed on September 12, 1945 during a test flight near California’s Lake Muroc airfield.
