James Howard fought in Burma as part of the American Volunteer Group (AVG), better known as the “Flying tigers”, where he shot down six Japanese aircraft. In 1942, returned to the United States, and in 1943 was appointed commander of a squadron of P-51 fighters from the 354th Fighter Air Group, based in the UK.
During the fighting in Europe, Lieutenant Colonel James Howard shot down six Luftwaffe aircraft.
