The Japanese soldiers from the Imperial Army taken prisoner after the capture of the island of Betio, entering Tarawa’s atoll. The Seconsd World War in the Pacific.
From the Japanese soldiers garrison, numbering more than 5,000 people, including 1,200 Korean workers. From 17 to 35 of the Japanese soldiers surrendered, as well as more than a hundred civilians.
