Japanese aircraft carrier Shinano in Tokyo Bay.
This is the only surviving photo of the Shinano aircraft carrier: during construction, for reasons of secrecy, it was forbidden to photograph it, and from the very first exit to the sea, it did not return: on November 29, 1944, on the way to Kure base for completion, Shinano aircraft carrier, which was partially ready and therefore relatively vulnerable, was torpedoed. American submarine SS-311 Archerfish (USS Archerfish) and sank.
The Shinano aircraft carrier began construction as a Yamato-class battleship, but was rebuilt into an aircraft carrier after the Battle of Midway. Since the Yamato-class battleships were the largest of all ships in the world, the Shinano aircraft carrier also became the largest aircraft carrier – it was surpassed only in the 1960s by the American nuclear-powered aircraft carrier Enterprise.
