The Japanese battleship Yamato (大和), the largest battleship ever built, undergoes sea trials in Sukumo Bay on 30 October 1941, shortly before entering service with the Imperial Japanese Navy.

The largest battleship ever constructed:
The Yamato was the most powerful battleship ever completed. With a full-load displacement exceeding 72,000 tons, she carried nine enormous 460 mm (18.1-inch) guns—the largest naval artillery ever mounted aboard a warship.
Built in absolute secrecy, Yamato represented Japan's belief that a handful of exceptionally powerful battleships could compensate for the overwhelming industrial strength of the United States.
Trials before the Pacific War:
This photograph was taken during the battleship's official sea trials in Sukumo Bay, only weeks before the attack on Pearl Harbor.
The trials tested the ship's propulsion, maneuverability, artillery systems and overall seaworthiness. At the time, Yamato embodied the pinnacle of battleship engineering and symbolized the ambitions of the Imperial Japanese Navy.
A magnificent warship in a changing era:
By the end of the war, Japanese sailors reportedly joked:
"There are three useless things in the world: the Egyptian pyramids, the Great Wall of China, and the battleship Yamato."
The saying reflected the harsh reality that air power had fundamentally changed naval warfare. Although Yamato was one of the most formidable battleships ever built, aircraft carriers had become the decisive force in the Pacific.
Nevertheless, the battleship continued to serve as an important fleet unit until her final mission. On 7 April 1945, Yamato sailed on the one-way Operation Ten-Go, knowing she lacked adequate air cover. She was sunk by waves of American carrier aircraft before reaching Okinawa, bringing the era of the great battleships to its symbolic end.
