Haakon VII

Portrait of Haakon VII, 1872-1957, King of Norway (1905-1957) in ceremonial uniform, presumably in 1942.

With the onset of the Nazi occupation of Norway in April 1940, Haakon VII refused to recognize Quisling’s collaborationist government and left Norway with the cabinet on June 7, 1940. In London, he headed the government of Norway in exile.
Haakon VII was very popular with the Norwegians, its monogram H7 became a symbol of the Resistance.
Haakon VII returned to Norway exactly 5 years later – on June 7, 1945.
