German U-848 submarine

German U-848 submarine (type IXD2, construction began on June 06, 1942, commissioned on March 20, 1943, 12th flotilla (Bordeaux, France), commander – corvette captain Wilhelm Rollmann) at the time of the fourth depth charge attack by a bomber B-24 “Liberator” (107th US Navy Squadron).

In total, 5 aircraft participated in the destruction of the German U-848 submarine – 3 Consolidated B-24 Liberator and 2 North American B-25 Mitchell. In total, 44 depth charges were dropped – 32 MK 47 and 12 MK 43.
According to a US Navy report, the U-848 submarine fired heavy anti-aircraft fire throughout the attacks.

The U-848 submarine was finally sunk after the seventh attack at about 17-00 by another Consolidated B-24 Liberator from 107th Squadron.

It is officially believed that the entire crew of German U-848 submarine (63 people) died, but on December 3, 1943, USS Marblehead discovered a rescue boat at sea with the only surviving crew member, boatswain Hans Schade, who was in critical condition, who died on December 4, 1943 (buried December 06, 1943 in Brazil).
