Josef Wurmheller won his first air victory on September 30, 1939. In total, before his death, he won 102 victories, of which 93 on the Western Front (including shooting down 20 of four-engine bombers and 56 Spitfire fighters) and 9 on the Eastern Front. Major Josef Wurmheller was killed on June 22, 1944 in an air battle against allied P-47 Thunderbolt and Spitfire fighters over Alencon (France).
