French civilians are laying flowers on the unburied body of an American soldier killed during the Battle of Carentan.
The French civilians in the photo are the inhabitants of the commune d’Isigny Saint Hilaire Petitville, bordering Carentan from the east, Adjutor Lecanu and his wife Marie.

On the right is a figure of an American soldier with a movie camera – she was removed from the photo to make it natural.

In the battles for Carentan, the 101st Airborne Division and the 2nd Armored Division participated.

Location: Carentan, France
Date: June 9, 1944 – June 13, 1944
