Jean Louis Xavier François Darlan. French statesman and military leader, an ardent supporter of the Vichy government.
During the landing of Anglo-American troops in North Africa, Jean Darlan was with the inspection in Algeria and in November 1942 ordered the French troops to cease resistance to the allies, and then to join the French armed forces in the fight against Nazi Germany. On November 14, 1942, he declared himself High Commissioner of France in North Africa and formed the Council of State.
Jean Darlan was assassinated on December 24, 1942 by a French nationalist.
