Finnish Air Force Messerschmitt Bf 109G-6 fighter aircraft MT-408 of squadron HLeLv 34, photographed in Finland, spring 1944.

This photograph shows a Messerschmitt Bf 109G-6 fighter aircraft of the Finnish Air Force, with the tactical number MT-408, belonging to fighter squadron HLeLv 34. The photo was taken in Finland during spring 1944, when Finland was allied with Nazi Germany in its war against the Soviet Union.

The Bf 109G-6 was the backbone of Finnish fighter aviation in the later stages of the Continuation War (1941–1944). Supplied by Germany, these aircraft gave Finnish pilots the ability to match modern Soviet fighters such as the Yak-9 and La-5. Finnish aces achieved considerable success flying the Messerschmitt, contributing to Finland’s reputation for skilled aerial combat during the war.

This particular aircraft, MT-408, was lost on July 24, 1944, when it crashed on a runway for unknown reasons. Despite such losses, the Bf 109 remained the primary fighter of the Finnish Air Force until the end of hostilities in September 1944.
