This photograph shows Messerschmitt Bf 109G-6 fighter MT-408 of the Finnish Air Force, assigned to Fighter Squadron HLeLv 34. The image was taken in Finland during the spring of 1944, when Finnish forces were engaged in the Continuation War against the Soviet Union alongside Germany.
Delivered by Germany, the Bf 109G-6 became the backbone of Finnish fighter aviation during the final phase of the conflict. Its speed, climb rate, and firepower enabled Finnish pilots to challenge modern Soviet fighters, including the Yak-9 and Lavochkin La-5. Many of Finland's highest-scoring fighter aces achieved their victories while flying this variant.
The aircraft pictured here, MT-408, remained in service only a few months after this photograph was taken. On July 24, 1944, it was lost in a runway accident under circumstances that remain unclear. Despite individual losses, the Messerschmitt Bf 109 continued to serve as Finland's principal fighter until the armistice with the Soviet Union in September 1944.
Although Finland operated German-built aircraft throughout much of the Continuation War, the country's air force retained its own organization, markings, and command structure. Aircraft such as MT-408 therefore illustrate both the close military cooperation between Finland and Germany and the distinctive character of Finnish military aviation during World War II.
