August 25, 1942, Yakov Antonov, carrying out the task of covering of attack German airfield near Mozdok city, was shot down.
According to Soviet records – he died. In fact, Yakov Antonov was shot down by the commander of the 77th Fighter Squadron of the German (JG 77), Major Gordon Gollob. Jakov Antonov bailed out, landed safely and was captured.
According to some sources, Yakov Antonov was sent to a POW camp near Mozdok, on the other – he escaped from captivity.
The further fate of Jacob Antonov is unknown.
