This photograph depicts an unidentified female sniper of the Red Army during combat operations on the Baltic Front in 1944. Equipped with a scoped Mosin–Nagant rifle, she waits in concealment for a target, illustrating one of the most demanding and dangerous combat specialties of the Great Patriotic War.
The Soviet Union was unique among the major participants of the Second World War in employing large numbers of women in frontline combat roles. More than 2,000 women completed sniper training, and several hundred served at the front. Collectively, Soviet female snipers were credited with thousands of confirmed enemy casualties, making them an important part of Red Army infantry operations.
The Mosin–Nagant Model 1891/30, fitted with a PU telescopic sight, became one of the most recognizable sniper rifles of the war. Its reliability, good accuracy, and simple construction allowed it to remain effective under the harsh conditions of the Eastern Front, from forests and marshes to urban battlefields.
Although the identity of the sniper shown here is unknown, photographs like this document the everyday reality of frontline service rather than famous individuals. They remind us that many of the Soviet Union's most effective soldiers remained anonymous despite their contribution to victory during the Great Patriotic War.
