An explosion on the American Essex aircraft carrier (USS Essex (CV-9) after a ram by a Japanese kamikaze plane.
The photo was taken from the battleship South Dakota (USS South Dakota (BB-57). On November 25, 1944, the Essex aircraft carrier as part of the 38th Task Force provided a landing party in Leyte Bay (Philippines).
The loss of the crew of the Essex carrier was 15 people killed and 44 wounded, but after three weeks of repair the ship was again in service.
