With the outbreak of World War II, the battleship was repaired in Toulon from damage received from the British on July 3, 1940 during Operation Catapult. On the morning of December 27, 1942, “Dunkerque” was blown up by its crew and flooded in a dry dock with the threat of the capture of Toulon by German troops.
